Using SampleSeq3000

SampleSeq3000 is a free step sequencer that builds drum and melodic patterns in your browser and exports a project for the Akai MPC Sample.

Steps

Click a step to switch it on or off. Right click or shift click a step to select it without changing it, then set its velocity, probability (0 to 100) and ratchet (1 to 8) in the step section below the channel.

Undo and redo, in the project keys, step back and forward through every pattern edit. That includes changing the resolution or the length, which drops steps that no longer fit the grid.

The four keys under the display choose what the data wheel changes. Their names are printed on the bottom line of the display: velocity, probability, ratchet and note when a step is selected, tempo, bars, swing and page when none is. Drag the wheel up or down, scroll over it, or focus it and use the arrow keys. Page Up and Page Down move by 10. Everything the wheel does can also be done with the controls on the panel.

Turning the wheel on bars only stages the new length. Press Enter or click the wheel to apply it, or Escape to cancel, so a quick spin never throws steps away.

Pads and pitch

Click a pad to hear it and select its lane. The small M key beside each pad mutes that lane in the preview only; the export is unaffected. A pad's MIDI note is 36 plus its index, and the names and files are read from the template project. The volume knob sets the preview level only.

The BASS, LEAD, PIANO and PLUCK lanes get a note picker in semitones from C. The chord pad uses the same picker to transpose the whole pre-baked chord as one one-shot; notes are never stacked. Pitch is written with the coarse tune modifier, 0.5 + semitones / 120.

Your own samples

Click a pad, then press Load sample beside the volume knob and pick a WAV, MP3, AIFF, FLAC or OGG file. In the sample section, set where it starts and ends, its gain, whether it plays reversed, and whether its lane is a drum or a pitched lane. Each sample can be up to 20 minutes long. Which formats open depends on your browser; WAV works everywhere.

Your samples can only be downloaded once all 16 pads have one. Until then the zip stays locked, the count beside Load sample shows how many are yours, and the .xpj export uses the original kit. The original 3000 samples are never included in a download.

With all 16 loaded, export downloads a zip. Unzip it and copy both the .xpj and its _[ProjectData] folder into the same folder on the card. Your samples are converted to 44.1 kHz WAV on this device first, and the project has been confirmed loading on the MPC Sample.

Lanes and feel

Euclid spreads N hits as evenly as possible over M steps and repeats that cycle across the whole lane. Velocity, probability, ratchet and pitch on existing steps are kept.

Swing delays the off-beat steps of the grid, for every lane or for one lane on its own. The presets are approximate shuffle feels tuned by ear. Humanise uses a seeded random generator, so what you hear in the preview is exactly what lands in the file.

Preview and device

The preview plays the template's own samples with Web Audio and is an approximation. The device applies its own engine, filters and envelopes, so the exported .xpj on the device is the source of truth.
